The head-to-head math
Two teams, one winner. The captain pick with the highest expected points wins 60% of head-to-head contests. The safe captain pick — the top-order bat with a high floor — wins more often than the differential. Ownership edge matters more than ceiling.
The mega math
25,000 entries, top 10% paid. The captain pick with the highest ceiling — the differential all-rounder on a flat deck — wins more mega contests than the safe captain. Ceiling matters more than ownership edge.
Worked example
Last season, the desk ran two teams on a flat-deck fixture: one in head-to-head, one in a 25k-entry mega. The head-to-head team captained the safe top-order bat (ownership 42%); the mega team captained the differential all-rounder (ownership 6%).
The safe captain scored 64. The differential captain scored 38 with the bat and took 2 wickets. The 2x multiplier delivered 152 from the differential; the safe captain delivered 128. The mega team finished in the top 8%; the head-to-head team won.
The hedge
The desk recommends two teams: one safe captain in head-to-head, one differential captain in mega. The variance is the cost of the hedge. The upside on both is the reward.
